Bob Staake

"Few present-day illustrators convey energy with more goofy retro zeal than Bob Staake" The Wall Street Journal

Known for his high-energy, retro-inspired illustration style, Bob Staake's designs appear everywhere from New Yorker covers to books to magazines, animation to greeting cards, advertising to newspapers, cereal boxes to CD-ROM games. He has authored and/or illustrated over 50 books, and his clients have included companies as diverse as TIME, McDonald's, American Express, Sony, United Airlines, Nickelodeon, The Chicago Tribune, Forbes, Simon and Schuster, Disney, Target Stores, and The New York Times, among many others.

In 2006 his book The Red Lemon received The New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book Award, and in 1997 Staake received the National Cartoonist Society’s Reuben Award for the Best Cartoonist in the Division of Newspaper Illustration. In an online interview, Drawn! suggested, “to say Bob Staake is just an illustrator is like saying The Beatles were just a bunch of musicians; the title doesn’t do the artist justice.”

Staake’s November 17, 2008 cover of The New Yorker entitled "Reflection," which commemorates Barack Obama's election as the nation's first African-American president, was named by TIME as #1 in their list of 10 Top Magazine Covers of 2008. His May 21, 2012, cover for The New Yorker, entitled "Spectrum of Light," which illustrates President Obama's support of gay marriage, was named by Ad Age as one of the 10 Great Magazine Covers of 2012.
